David Southall and Penny Mellor

Peer Pressure - Finlay Scott Under Fire
The Southall case reached the House of Lords this
month. Baroness Golding who once supported the Henshalls switched
to support Dr David Southall some months ago. The reasons were made
abundantly clear in her letter to the Sentinel sometime ago. She
wrote “It Was I, as the former MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme,
who first asked for an investigation on the use of CNEP as a treatment
for desperately ill babies with serious breathing problems. I did
this following evidence shown to me by Mr and Mrs Henshall which
was, for the main part, not directly related to the North Staffordshire
Hospital. Since then, I have followed closely media reports of the
various actions being taken against paediatricians, especially Dr
Southall. I have often looked in disbelief at the virulent attacks
on Dr Southall and have had many unquiet moments about the way I
first dealt with Mr and Mrs Henshall's concerns and whether I could
have dealt with them in another way. This latest action by the General
Medical Council in banning Dr Southall from working”
Statement
about the Hearing at the GMC over the CNEP Study 1989-1992 13th
May 2008, 12:12 am
An 8-week Fitness to Practice Hearing is just starting at the General Medical
Council for three consultant paediatricians from the University Hospital
of North Staffordshire, namely David Southall, Andy Spencer and Martin
Samuels. This is with regard to complaints about the administration of
a research project involving newborns in a randomised controlled trial
of negative pressure ventilation (CNEP) run in two centres, Queen Charlottes
in London and North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke, between 1989 and
1992. The GMC will be looking at whether these issues warrant sanctions
against the doctors involved, including erasure of these consultants from
the medical register.
The
Child Protection Emergency
Over the last year, NHS Exposed has been determined
to expose the truth regarding the emergency situation of child protection
in the United Kingdom. Vulnerable children are being placed at serious
risk due to the General Medical Council’s failure to recognise
the importance of placing the abused child’s welfare first.
Press
Release from PACA – Professionals Against Child Abuse
PACA has had major concerns about the General Medical
Council's Fitness to Practice procedures in high profile cases of
paediatricians who have led the way in child protection work. PACA
considers the GMC’s actions have reduced the willingness with
which paediatricians will report suspicions of child abuse and engage
in child protection work, including acting as expert witnesses.
PACA has tried to engage with the GMC, but Professor Catto, President
of the GMC, and Finlay Scott, CEO, have responded that PACA is "painting
a misleading picture, thus adding to the very problem they say they
wish to resolve".
Response
to a "Report of a review of the research framework in North
Staffordshire Hospital NHS Trust (The Griffiths Report)", released
by the NHS Executive on May 8th 2000
By David P Southall OBE, MD, FRCP, FRCPCH
I have written this response as the Principal Investigator
of the research projects discussed in the Griffiths' Report following
many visits to review the original data held by the North Staffordshire
Hospital NHS Trust and freely made available to me.
...
There was no recognition of the possibility that
the complaints about the research of which I was a director could
be related to a wide-ranging campaign to discredit the child protection
work that I was, and many other paediatricians are, undertaking.
The Panel's exploration of fabricated and induced illness in children
was superficial and outside the terms of reference for their inquiry.
...
Scientology
and the case of Dr Patrick Cosgrove
Taken in isolation, Dr Cosgrove’s allegations
of Scientology-driven influence at the GMC may not, at first glance,
appear particularly credible. After all, the GMC eventually struck
him off the medical register! Unfortunately, support, albeit unintended,
for his concerns comes from a very unlikely source, in the shape
of anti-Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy campaigner, Ms Penny
Mellor...
Danger

Professor David Southall, the beleaguered paediatrician
at the centre of the CNEP controversy, claims to have been the victim
of a smear campaign...
David
Southall - Covert Video Surveillance
In 1997, the controversial paper on covert video
recordings of Life Threatening Child Abuse was subject to debate. The
British Medical Journal at the time reported, "Parents were
secretly filmed and were seen on film attempting to suffocate, kicking,
punching, and poisoning their children, who were aged from 2 months
to 44 months. The covert surveillance, which was carried out at
the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and at North Staffordshire
Hospital in Stoke on Trent between 1986 and 1994, uncovered deliberate
suffocation in 30 of the children. The video evidence led to care
orders in 38 of the 39 cases and to 33 criminal prosecutions. After
the abuse was detected 23 parents or step parents were identified
by a psychiatrist as clearly having a serious personality disorder".
We make this paper, in full, available for download
in PDF format because it is an important piece of historical research
to combat the problem of increasing child abuse. ...

GMC v Professor David Southall - The Transcripts November 2007
Professor David Southall has had no rights to Article
6 of the Human Rights Act 1998. As such, the General Medical Council
has failed to assess his fitness to practise fairly. They have instead
listened to the propaganda surrounding this issue. The only independent
witness, the social worker Ms Salem in the case of Child M was intimidated
by the panel and the GMC's barrister Mr Tyson.. ...

David Southall always attract a great deal of media attention. This
is hardly surprising, because child protection is an emotive issue

Imagine
By Justice4Maeve (Mar 3rd 2008)
Keran Henderson 42 was convicted of manslaughter
of baby Maeve Sheppard on the 13th November 2007 at Reading Crown
Court. She now appeals her conviction and commands the maximum media
publicity.
Justice4Maeve was set up recently and Mr and Mrs
Sheppard responded as follows "We would like to say "Thank
you" to the person who has set up this blog site. This has
given us some comfort to realise not everybody out there will blindly
follow the media's coverage and the so called facts given by the
Henderson Campaign. We would like to state that the verdict was
correct, although the sentence was too light. We also wish to state
that we do not align ourselves with Keran's Campaign and we find
it highly distasteful that in light of our silence they have taken
it upon themselves to publicise that they are running this campaign
for ourselves and Maeve"....
The General Medical council has today demonstrated,
yet again, that it is incapable of adequately carrying out its statutory
duty to regulate the medical profession.
In considering a complaint against Professor Rod
Griffiths, former Regional Director of Public Health in the West
Midlands, the GMC’s case examiners acknowledged that Professor
Griffiths’ behaviour had been inappropriate in several ways.

Ms Susan Walters is an admirable woman. Since her mother's tragic death in July 1998, she has fought tirelessly to extract the truth about her death from Leicestershire's Glenfield Hospital. Now, after more than five years of tears, devastation, dedication, determination, courage and extremely hard work, the Health Ombudsman has upheld a number of extremely serious complaints against Mr Andrew William Hall, the Consultant Surgeon who operated on her mother...
Top Doc in Locum Slur Outrage
By Rachel Martin
(June 20th 2004)
Fury gripped the UK's locum doctor community this week after a prominent senior medic described locums as having no friends, a family life in tatters and never having a proper relationship with anybody. The comments, made by Dr Umesh Prabhu, have provoked a storm of protest. One senior locum consultant, who asked not to be named but is happily married with several children and an extensive social circle, said they were "absolutely furious" after reading Dr Prabhu's remarks in the 3rd June 2004 issue of Hospital Doctor....
STIGMA - A Wrong Diagnosis of Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy
(Sept 21st 2008)
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy or MSBP is a diagnosis given to a mother or care giver to describe aspects of their behaviour. This behaviour usually includes subjecting [what appears to be] a previously healthy child to unnecessary and often painful tests or medical interventions i.e. scans, x-rays and even surgical procedures to gain attention from the medical profession.
With an accusation of MSBP comes suspicion, stigma, prejudice and discrimination. I was accused of MSBP in late 1999 and my children were both put on the "at risk register" by Social Services in early 2000. I remember the first case conference as if it was yesterday. I was alone and taken into a room...

"Chartered
Scientist": the latest marketing ploy from the British Psychological
Society
The British Psychological Society has launched its
latest PR marketing label in line with its hunger for 'science'
kudos - "Chartered Scientist". For the price of a trip
to the zoo (£25), BPS psychologists can buy the title "Chartered
Scientist" and strut and pout like prize pigeons amongst their
'scientist' colleagues in various professional settings. But what
exactly does it mean for a psychologist to claim to be a 'scientist',
much less a "Chartered Scientist" (fanfare of trumpets)?

British
Psychological Society Ethics: Lip-Service to Justice?
Not surprisingly, psychology and the ethical system
which purports to guard against the wrongdoings of psychologists
is just as tainted with the drug of complacency when it comes to

of British Psychological Disciplinary (BPS) hearings in recent years,
which illustrate the abject leniency with which unethical psychologists
appear to be treated. ....
Psychological
Imperialism
Agenda For Change (A4C) is the name of a reform implemented
by the UK government since 2004. It sought to standardise salaries
across the National Health Service (NHS) according to standardised
job descriptions and profiles. The process was extensive, and whilst
A4C may have been conceived originally with fairness in mind, it
was soon hijacked by psychologists, who, almost overnight, catapulted
their status and pay scales in the NHS to a level that is now far
beyond common sense, fairness or rational justification. This overnight
swindle has taken place largely under the promotion of psychology
by the British Psychological Society, who appears to have established
hegemony within the UK, and by the public's ignorance of what psychology
is....

The
Polemics Surrounding the Diagnosis and Management of Hypothyroidism
By Diana Holmes (Feb 8th 2008)
The diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism (DMH)
is most certainly problematical inasmuch that it is a highly controversial
issue. This has been the cause of much contention over the decades,
none more so than today. Clinical practice for (DMH) is seriously
flawed. Misleading information with regard to the interpretation
of the ‘reference interval’ and sole reliance on thyroid
function test results play a significant role in undetected hypothyroidism
on a global scale. Indeed this issue needs to be addressed urgently.

Certified Dead was written for a GCSE Exam. It was
a real life narrative written from the eyes of a 14-year-old child

NHS Trust. The nursing staff had not noticed that their patient
had been dead in his bed for a fairly long period as evidenced by
the nature of the cloudiness in the dead man’s eyes. Papworth
NHS Trust has stated that this lack of monitoring is acceptable
in an acute cardiac unit for a seriously ill patient awaiting theatre.
